PiYo Week 1 Review
It’s official, I have finished week 1 of Piyo with my online Support and Accountability group. I am doing a Piyo/Running hybrid routine and guess what? I absolutely love this program! Yes, I am the girl you usually find in the gym, partially because of my lack of certain equipment that I needed for my high jump training in the past. My first real job was at a health club which made it very convenient to do my training without a lot of extra cost. But, nowadays, the cost of health clubs can get pretty expensive and then when you add in the cost of the daycare or a babysitter to watch the kiddos at home, it gets pretty expensive!
I have to say that over the years….many, many years, I have been more focused on let’s say…simply running faster or getting stronger…flexibility was not high on my list. Also missing in my routine – stability and balance work. I have always been interested and intrigued by yoga, but with my busy schedule, the 90 minute classes plus drive time and the monthly costs…made me think twice about joining a yoga studio – it wasn’t the right fit for me. Something else that I like about the Piyo program is that anybody can do it, you don’t need weights, you don’t need a lot of time as most workouts are only 30 minutes, and as always with all Beachbody products, there is someone to follow who is doing a modified version of the moves.
Piyo is a blend of Pilates and yoga but set to a faster pace and the workouts are much shorter than traditional yoga classes. Nearly every move involves your core…and most of the time, you don’t even realize it.
The Piyo Lean Eating Plan is set up to teach you what your body needs to feel satiated and nourished as you build lean muscle and burn a ton of calories. And, guess what? You get to choose your own delicious snacks and meals. (Note: the food higher up on the lists in the book are considered healthier than the foods listed towards the bottom). I usually recommend that you write down what you eat so you can keep track of what is working and what is not working for you – at least in the beginning of your journey.
Here is the Piyo Food Tracker if you would like to use it. I tend to eat similar foods each week as it is just a lot easier for me while managing multiple businesses and a family.
So, for a target range, I am eating:
- 6 servings of Primary Veggies
- 2 servings of Secondary Veggies and Grains
- 3 servings of Fresh Fruit
- 6 servings of Lean Protein
- 4 servings of Healthy Fats
- Each plan works out to about 40% carbs, 35% protein and 25% fat
What did my workouts look like this week?
My main goal with Piyo is not to lose weight but to increase my strength, flexibility and core. Therefore, I chose the maintenance plan which you can also calculate on the same page that the worksheet is located for weight loss in the book.
Day 1 is Fundamentals (40 minutes) This is your chance to learn all of the moves you will find in Piyo. Chalene breaks down everything and teaches you the correct form so you can get the best results.
Day 2 is Define: Lower Body (25 minutes) This is where you work your quads, booty, calves and of course…there is always core. This is a critical workout that is extremely important because it works your largest muscles which means you burn the most calories.
Day 3 is Define: Upper Body (20 minutes) This is the workout where you will work your shoulders, triceps and biceps and of course, your core.
Day 4 is Sweat (35 minutes) This is a fast-paced cardio yoga flow and bodyweight resistence and strength training to help lean out and define your entire body.
Day 5 is a Rest Day
Day 6 is Define: Lower Body
Day 7 is Define: Upper Body
And, Week 1 is complete!
